Feeding & Swallowing Disorder in Children

SPEECH AND LANGUAGE THERAPY

Trouble communicating impacts children’s ability to express needs, share ideas, and develop relationships. Our certified speech-language pathologists (SLPs) build speech, language, and social communication skills to facilitate success in academic, social, and home environments.

Speech DISORDERS

Signs & Causes of Speech and Language Disorders

SPEECH AND LANGUAGE DISORDERS

Communication is fundamental to our ability to build relationships, learn, and participate in everyday activities. Speech and language disorders can impact a child in every sphere of life, including at home, in the classroom, with peers, and for safety and medical care. Speech and language disorders can involve various skill sets, including:

  • SPEECH: how we form sounds and words. Speech disorders can reduce a person’s ability to be understood because of how they pronounce certain sounds or how fluently they can get their words out.
  • LANGUAGE: the way we use words and sentences to communicate or comprehend a message. Language disorders can reduce a person’s ability to tell a story, explain a sequence of steps, use correct grammar, or understand directions and concepts.
  • PRAGMATICS: the way we use language for social communication. Pragmatic language disorders can reduce a person’s ability to form friendships, understand humor, or adjust to different social contexts.

Seattle Therapy: Skills for Life

Speech Therapy at Seattle Therapy

Speech therapy services will begin with a comprehensive speech and language evaluation, including a parent interview, that will highlight strengths and challenges across various areas of communication. Your certified speech therapist will create individualized and measurable goals based on the data collected during the evaluation process, as well as provide recommendations regarding the frequency of therapy and relevant supports for environments such as home and school.

Therapy will consist of hour-long appointments, allowing your child to dive deeply into meaningful, functional therapeutic activities during every session. Our therapy is play-based and holistic. STS stands out amongst service providers because we provide wraparound care*, meaning our services extend beyond our clinic, reaching your child in all areas of life. Our speech therapy is:

COLLABORATIVE. At STS, we prioritize collaboration across care providers, including other therapists, teachers, and families. This allows for a robust treatment plan with consistent expectations and strategies, leading to maximal outcomes. Collaboration with family is of utmost importance to us because we know that you are the expert on your child!

FLEXIBLE. Speech therapy at STS is tailored to meet the needs of each individual we serve. We can shift between in-person and remote services as needed, or can visit a child at home or school to better understand their needs. We have options for cotreatment, dyads, and small groups when it is determined that these modes will best support a child’s development. We offer a variety of scheduling options so that appointment frequency best fits the needs of each child and family.

MEANINGFUL. Our compassionate speech therapists know how to incorporate each child’s strengths and interests into therapy so they feel empowered and motivated to grow. Our therapy model ensures every goal supports functional skills that prompt measurable change in a child’s everyday life.
